Common Core

The Common Core standards were designed to get all states to use the same set of academic standards in the K-12 public schools. Currently, the CCSS cover Math and English Language Arts (ELA). History/Social Studies is incorporated into the ELA standards in the section titled "Literacy in History/Social Studies". These standards are written in three grade level groupings: 6-8, 9-10, and 11-12. Each of these three groupings contain four distinct types of standards: Key Ideas and Details; Craft and Structure; Integration of Knowledge and Ideas; and Range of Reading and Level of Text Complexity. In these standards, the content is not defined - only the methods for teaching and student understanding of the content are included. Below, you can see how the expected level of complexity for each of the four types of standards changes from 6 through 12 grades.
